SPPS Fall Athletics Update - August 14
Following the recommendations of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) will offer the following high school sports this fall:
- Boys and girls soccer
- Girls tennis
- Boys and girls cross-country
- Girls swimming and diving
Teams are allowed to start practicing on Monday, Aug. 17. Some of the changes that participants will see this fall include:
- Teams and practices will be limited to 25 participants
- Competitions will be limited to the conference or section only
- There will be no interscholastic scrimmages
- Competitions and practices will be closed to spectators
- There will be no middle school sports
In addition, football and volleyball have been moved to a new spring season. Training for these and other spring sports (track, baseball and softball) will have a reduced training season this fall. Tryouts, scrimmages, captain’s practices and competitions will not be allowed during fall training season for these sports.
SPPS takes the health and safety of our athletes and staff very seriously. All participants will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms prior to practices and competitions in accordance with SPPS and Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) guidelines. If a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 is identified, the individual will be asked to stay home, and anyone who was in close contact with them will be notified and instructed on the next course of action. Participants should use the COVID-19 Reporting System to report symptoms, positive tests or close contacts.
SPPS has developed a comprehensive fall preparedness plan that all teams will follow. While students are in distance learning, voluntary participation in athletics allows them to interact with their peers and coaches while observing social distancing and other safety measures.
