Governor Walz Thanks SPPS for Keeping Students Healthy and Fed

Published Sunday, Sept. 13

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz visited Como Park Senior High School to thank Saint Paul Public Schools staff for keeping students healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Walz witnessed first-hand the SPPS food distribution process and helped load buses with food for distribution to families.

The event was the third stop on Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan’s Statewide Safe Learning Tour. He was joined by Director of Nutrition Services Stacy Koppen, Superintendent Joe Gothard and several members of the Transportation, Nutrition Services and other SPPS teams. To date, SPPS has provided more than 8 million meals to children since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

This fall during distance learning, meals are available for Saint Paul kids 18 and under, and those with a disability enrolled in a school program. Weekly meal boxes are delivered to homes and are also available for pickup at five high schools across the city starting Monday, Sept. 14.
