The St. Paul Rotary Club named Andrea Ylonen, a kindergarten teacher from The Heights Community School, as its “2019 Educator of the Year” during a celebration event on May 21.
Andrea Ylonen’s has 34 years of teaching experience with 25 years in Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS). She was nominated by her colleagues, Nikki Gordon, occupational therapist and Sonja Johansen, a speech teacher. The Rotary Club cited Ms. Ylonen’s collaborative and innovative teaching methods and her skills in engaging students in the classroom. Andrea’s dedication in the classroom is on display daily as she acts as a teacher, counselor, mother, nurse and motivator of children.
“We are proud of Ms. Ylonen’s amazing work at The Heights,” said Chreese Jones, Principal. “She keeps students engaged in learning from the moment they walk in the doors through the end of the day.”
The St. Paul Rotary Club also recognized the academic achievement of 100 SPPS students. These “Rotation Forward” students demonstrated a commitment to learning and academic success. Students at the following schools were recognized this year:
Each student was nominated by their school’s educators. The students received a small monetary award, a recognition plaque and are recognized in the Pioneer Press (each student also receives a copy of the newspaper).
Cedrick Baker, SPPS Chief of Staff, also spoke at the event.
