Grading Update for JHS Students
Semester 2, 20-21 School Year
(During JHS Distance Learning 2.0)
--Like all other SPPS high schools, JHS will continue to use its regular common grading procedures in all courses for the 2020-21 school year, regardless of whether we are in a distance learning, hybrid, or an on-site scenario.
--All JHS teachers will be using the standardized 70/30 scoring split. 70% of a student’s grade is determined by summative assessments (what a student can can show and do by the end of a unit of study); 30% of the grade will be determined by the level of participation and completion of formative work (demonstration of consistent effort throughout the course, including participation in weekly synchronous class sessions.)
--Teachers will use A, B, C, D, and NP grades based on formative and summative assessments.
--Though teachers will continue to post C and D grades, during distance learning SPPS will be adjusting all grades of C and D to passing (P), so distance learning does not negatively impact students’ Grade Point Averages (GPAs). This adjustment will be made for as long as students are in distance learning and will also include the first and second quarters of 2020-2021 school year. This includes any grades students earned through the earn-back process during Quarter 2 this year.
--If students and families wish to opt out of this new grading update and earn a letter grade or wish to earn a P in place of a B, students may contact their school counselor.
--Course credits are earned by earning a passing grade.
--Students who receive an NP need to contact their counselor for opportunities to recover lost credits ASAP at the end of each quarter.
Lesson Work Submission Deadlines and Procedures
--During Distance Learning, all work assigned in a given week is due to be submitted to teachers by 11:59 PM each Friday.
--Late work will be accepted by teachers and no late-work penalty will be applied until the date of the summative assessment of each unit, but it is greatly to the student’s benefit to submit work on a daily basis and no later than the weekly Friday deadlines.
--It is the student’s responsibility to know the dates of the summative assessments for the units of study in a course. This information is readily available on Schoology course pages.
--If a student needs to turn work in after the unit deadlines, they need to make arrangements ahead of time with their teacher. Unless students have made specific arrangements with their teachers to submit work after the date of the summative assessment, it is likely that teachers will not have time to evaluate that work. This is also the case for students who wait until the final days of a quarter to submit all or most of a course’s work. District grading deadlines mean that teachers simply will not have the time to fairly evaluate work that comes in late without prior arrangement.
--If students want to ensure that their work will be evaluated and be counted toward their earning of course credit, they need to turn it in on a weekly basis.
Update on Daily Classwork Time Commitment During Distance Learning
--The Minnesota Department of Education and the SPPS Board of Education is requiring JHS and all other SPPS high schools to offer an online program that is as equivalent as possible to our regular day program. This means that students need to plan to be working on school work for approximately 4 to 6 hours daily, just as they would during a regular seven-class school day.
--Even during distance learning, lessons are required to cover relevant subject-area standards and students earning credit must demonstrate their understanding of those standards.
--Students can complete asynchronous lessons whenever it is convenient for them to do so during the week before the Friday deadlines.
Tutoring and Other Support for JHS Students
---JHS offers a wide array of academic, social support, and mentoring opportunities for students. Updated schedules for these opportunities during Quarter 3 will posted on the JHS website and sent to all students and families on Monday, February 8 and will be in place for the rest of the school year.
Attendance and Importance of Participation in M-TH Synchronous Class Sessions
--Just like in regular school, attendance and effort are keys to success. We will continue closely monitoring attendance and class participation of all students and will be contacting students and parents of students who are not attending or not completing work so that we can offer support for changes in those nonproductive behaviors.
--Students need check their SPPS email at least twice each day on every school day.
--Students need to arrange work and other schedules so that they are able to attend the daily synchronous class sessions. Those sessions are required.
iPad and Internet Support
--Students who do not have an iPad, whose iPad is not functioning correctly, or who do not have access to wifi service, should contact Mr. Norby ASAP. He can help get you connected to what you need.
The Future of Grading
--As we move through the 2020-21 school year, JHS will continue to work on revisions to its overall grading policy with the goal being to establish a more clear standards-based evaluation and grading system in which student work products scored by rubric become the main way for teachers to determine a student's grade. Rather than the current summative/formative points accumulation system, the new system will be based on evidence of student work effort and completion--what the student actually produces and its quality.
