Fourth Grade Students Create and Perform an Original Opera

For the 24th year, Linwood Monroe Arts Plus School’s fourth grade students are creating their own original Fourth Grade Opera!   Linwood Monroe Arts Plus, a dual campus, pre K-8 th grade program, is one of Saint Paul Public School’s high-demand, successful magnet programs.  The focus of Linwood Monroe’s program is to infuse the arts and other academic core subject areas.  The Fourth Grade Opera is a rich example of arts infusion at it’s best.

Over the course of eighteen days, students create an original story, compose songs, choreograph movement, design sets, audition, rehearse and perform their own opera.  This arts residency is an annual rite-of-passage for fourth graders at Linwood Monroe who collaborate with classroom teachers, art specialists, family volunteers and visual artist in residence Malia Burkhart.

The aspect of this production that makes it unique is that it is created and performed by the fourth grade students at Linwood Monroe Arts Plus. Through the intersection of music, theater, visual art and movement- fourth grade students tell an amazing and imaginative story.
