Maxfield Elementary Announces New Principal

July  15, 2021

Dear Maxfield Elementary School Families and Staff,

I am pleased to share with you that I have selected a new leader for Maxfield Elementary School. Please join me in welcoming someone you may know, Dr. Leslie Hitchens, as your school’s new principal beginning in the 2021-22 school year.

Dr. Hitchens brings a wealth of experience in helping all students feel represented and being accepted as their authentic selves. She has served Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) students for nearly 20 years as a teacher serving students who receive specialized education, a peer assistance and review coach, an administrative intern at Maxfield, and most recently, as a K-12 Special Education Supervisor for SPPS.

Dr. Hitchens understands the importance of collaborating with staff and families and embracing the unique gifts that each child brings. As the new principal, Dr. Hitchens is committed to working within the Maxfield community to make continual positive changes and growth in the academic and social-emotional learning of all students.

Dr. Hitchens is a leader in racial equity work and will continue engaging in the unconscious bias of structures that hinder and harm the achievement of our Black and Brown students. She is proud to continue the great work of Maxfield Elementary.

Dr. Hitchens has excellent academic qualifications with a Bachelor of Arts degree in special education and elementary education from the Xavier University of Louisiana, a Master of Arts degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Minnesota -- Twin Cities, and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Hamline University.

We will work with Dr. Hitchens to ensure a smooth transition and a strong start to the new school year. To help, please take a moment to complete a short survey (https://forms.gle/Kkbz5gf79qWTZziZ9). This survey is an opportunity to help your new principal understand the values and priorities of your school community.

We will work together to determine different opportunities to meet and engage with Dr. Hitchens before school starts in the fall. If you have any questions, please contact me at 651-767-8152. Thank you for supporting Maxfield Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Joe Gothard
Superintendent
