Leadership Change at Barack and Michelle Obama Elementary School

Dear Barack and Michelle Obama Elementary Staff and Families,

With mixed emotions, I am writing to announce that after 3 years at Barack and Michelle Obama Elementary, I have decided to accept a new position as the Director of Student Services for Roseville Area Public Schools. I will remain your principal through the end of the school year.

My respect and appreciation for Obama scholars, families and staff made this a difficult decision. I love coming to work, helping each child feel welcome, and working with our dedicated staff and teachers.

Together, we have created a school community that values high academic expectations, culturally relevant teaching and learning, collaboration, equity and inclusion in valuing each learner as their authentic selves. We have strengthened our community by sharing our experiences and celebrating our gifts as a learning community.  We could not have accomplished so much without your support and for that I’m truly grateful.

My leadership team will identify members of our school community to be part of a small interview team. Assistant Superintendent Andrew Collins will convene the group for principal candidate interviews in April. You will receive a communication from Mr. Collins detailing the hiring process and timeline in the coming weeks.

We will work together to determine different opportunities to meet and engage with your new principal, following state orders and health guidelines, before school starts in the fall. If you have questions about the process, please contact me.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with you and your child over the last several years. I will miss the community of students, staff and families that made my work at Barack and Michelle Obama Elementary enjoyable every day.

Sincerely,

Niceta Thomas, Principal
Barack and Michelle Obama Elementary School
