Spring 2019 Girls on the Run at Horace Mann - Registration is Open!

Registration is now open for the Spring 2019 season of Girls on the Run at Horace Mann! GOTR Twin Cities engages in a lottery based online registration system between Feb. 1 and Feb. 6 to ensure a fair and equal process for all girls. After Feb. 6, registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Girls on the Run is an after-school program that uses the power of running to prepare 3rd - 5th grade girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Over the course of the 10-week, 20-lesson season, girls learn life-changing lessons about healthy friendships, teamwork, decision-making, self-respect and more, all while preparing to run a 5k.

Open to all 3rd - 5th grade girls; no previous running experience required, and need-based financial aid is available. Girls on the Run can also provide shoes, pants, and/or sports hijabs if needed. Register today!

Our Spring 2019 season will be each Tuesday & Thursday 3:00 - 4:45 from March 19 - June 4 culminating with the Girls on the Run 5k on June 1. Space is limited so register early! Visit or contact Laura Rapacz at for more information.

Family Volunteer Service Night Friday February 22 6-8 PM We invite all Horace Mann families to attend the Voices in Our Community Family Volunteer Service Night on February 22. At this free event, families will have time to connect to each other and members of our community while working on service projects benefiting a wide variety of community partners.

We are collecting supplies for two of the projects. Boxes will be located outside the office beginning Friday, February 1. We are looking for tee-shirts - especially adult sized - to be made into grocery bags for Keystone Community Partners food shelf. Please help us by donating your travel size (or even regular size) toiletries for women and children that need to leave their homes in a hurry to start over someplace safer. They need toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, combs, bars of soap or body wash, socks or other personal care items. Thank you for helping us help our partner, CLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio).

Our last planning meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday February 7, 6:30-8:00pm, at school. We welcome all. Watch the Perspectives for additional volunteer opportunities. Questions? Contact Terri Shefelbine at

It’s time to start thinking about the 2019 Horace Mann School PTA Auction! Did you know that approximately 40% of the auctions’ proceeds came from the Great Gatherings? Please consider hosting a Great Gathering as part of the Horace Mann School PTA Auction. Great Gathering (GG) submissions are due February 26th for the March 8 Auction. We need GG hosts.

Never hosted a GG? Visit our Great Gatherings site and we'll guide you through the steps. You'll find examples of past events like Ladies Cribbage Night, Cooking classes, Concerts, Cycling Taproom Tours, Swim parties and Picnics in the Park. Great gatherings are for the young and old--families, adults, or specific grade-age kids.

Already hosted and ready to submit? First, take a look at the Great Gatherings Calendar and then: fill out a Great Gatherings Submission form. Not only are these gatherings important for our fundraising, but they also provide a significant way to promote community-building for students, families, and adults. You can do any novelty themed party. Creativity, fun, and simplicity are encouraged--they're easier to host than you may think!

Help us improve GGs by taking a quick 2-minute survey now. Answers welcomed! GG Submissions are due by February 26th.

Questions? We have answers. Contact Karla Lauerman Cummins, Jen Williams, and Therese Sherman at Thank you, and see you at the auction.

The 2019 Horace Mann PTA Silent & Live Auction:  ‘One Small Night for Mann, One Giant Leap for Mann Kids’ This year’s Silent Auction will be here before you know it.  Remember to save Friday, March 8th to attend this fun, adults-only event at Harriet Island Pavilion. We need YOU to make the event a success and support PTA funded programs at Horace Mann!

  1. We need GREAT GATHERING hosts! These gatherings are important for our fundraising. More importantly, they provide a significant way to promote community building for students, families, and adults. Great Gatherings are…events, parties, or unique experiences generously donated and hosted by members of the Horace Mann community. They are attended by Horace Mann parents, students, teachers and staff or, in some cases, all. Past events included a Ladies night out, a Can Can Wonderland golf event, a Wine and Cheese night, a Tapas cooking party, and a Kindergarten Movie night. You can do any novelty-themed party.  What might you do? The ideas are endless and creativity is encouraged.
  2. Donating your TALENT OR SERVICE is a great way to contribute to the event.  A few great ideas from past events: donate lawn mowing or yard cleanup…donate a family car wash…offer your expertise as a graphic designer, plumber or electrician…offer to babysit…provide a dessert of the month…No donation is too small.
  3. We are collecting donations of adult beverages to be raffled for our WALL OF ADULT BEVERAGES.  Donations can be dropped in the school office.
  4. Do you have a small business or a service that could use an ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY?  The Auction Catalog is the perfect way to market to the Horace Mann community! $25 buys a business card size ad, $50 for a half page, and $100 for a full page!  A great way to promote! If interested, please contact Anne Pavlis ( for details.
