Spelling Bee Winner Crowned Our fourth and fifth graders competed in a spelling bee on Friday, February 1. The competition began in each classroom. The top three or four spellers were chosen to represent the class in the school spelling bee. Fourth and fifth graders had to stand up and correctly spell a work to continue through the rounds. It took about one hour, but Ezra emerged victorious. First, he correctly spelled “diminuitive”. Then he correctly spelled the championship word, “extricates.” Congratulations to Ezra and good luck in the next stage.

Box Tops for Education - Submit Your Collection prior to February 22! Box Tops for Education is a program designed by General Mills in 1996 to help with funding for schools. Hundreds of products added box tops to their own packages. Each box top submitted is worth 10 cents. Although this doesn't seem like much, when we pool our collections, the results are terrific. Box Tops submissions occur two times per school year. Horace Mann's goal for collecting Box Tops for Education for the 2018-19 school year is to earn $1,000. In order to meet this goal, we need your help!

  1. Shop as you normally would. Various food items, toiletry items and cleaners all have the boxtops logo. For a list of participating products, please visit Box Tops for Education’s website (http://www.boxtops4education.com/)
  2. Clip your box top. Each box top for education is worth 10 cents for our school. Some products have more than one box top on it.
  3. Bring in your box tops. Simply drop off your Box Tops for Education in the school office or send them to school with your child. We will coordinate mailing them in to support the school.

If you have any questions please contact Heather Clark at kamr0009@umn.edu.

The 2019 Horace Mann PTA Silent & Live Auction:  ‘One Small Night for Mann, One Giant Leap for Mann Kids’ This year’s Silent Auction will be here before you know it.  Remember to save Friday, March 8th to attend this fun, adults-only event at Harriet Island Pavilion. We need YOU to make the event a success and support PTA funded programs at Horace Mann!

  1. Please consider putting together a GIFT BASKET to donate to the auction.  Google is a great source for gift basket ideas!
  2. We need GREAT GATHERING hosts! Signing up to host has never been easier!
  3. Do you have a TALENT OR SERVICE? It’s a great way to contribute to the event.  No donation is too small.
  4. The easiest way to contribute is to pick up a gift certificate to any STORE or RESTAURANT and donate it to the auction!
  5. We are collecting donations of adult beverages to be raffled for our WALL OF ADULT BEVERAGES.  Donations can be dropped in the school office.
  6. Do you have a small business or a service that could use an ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY?  The Auction Catalog is the perfect way to market to the Horace Mann community! $25 buys a business card size ad, $50 for a half page, and $100 for a full page!  A great way to promote! If interested, please contact Anne Pavlis (anna.pavlis@comcast.net) for details.

It’s time to start thinking about the 2019 Horace Mann School PTA Auction! Did you know that approximately 40% of the auctions’ proceeds came from the Great Gatherings? Please consider hosting a Great Gathering as part of the Horace Mann School PTA Auction. Great Gathering (GG) submissions are due February 26th for the March 8 Auction. We need GG hosts.

Never hosted a GG? Visit our Great Gatherings site and we'll guide you through the steps. You'll find examples of past events like Ladies Cribbage Night, Cooking classes, Concerts, Cycling Taproom Tours, Swim parties and Picnics in the Park. Great gatherings are for the young and old--families, adults, or specific grade-age kids.

Already hosted and ready to submit? First, take a look at the Great Gatherings Calendar and then: fill out a Great Gatherings Submission form. Not only are these gatherings important for our fundraising, but they also provide a significant way to promote community-building for students, families, and adults. You can do any novelty themed party. Creativity, fun, and simplicity are encouraged--they're easier to host than you may think!

Questions? We have answers. Contact Karla Lauerman Cummins, Jen Williams, and Therese Sherman at hmgreatgatherings@gmail.com. Thank you, and see you at the auction.
