Perspectives 05-03-19

Staff Changes Announced It is with a heavy heart, but happiness for the staff members that we announce some retirements. Colleen Fridlund (currently 5th Grade Teacher), Debbie Thompson (currently 4th Grade Teacher), and Renette McParland (School Social Worker) will retire at the end of the school year. We wish them well as they move into a new phase in their lives!

Next year we will only have two sections of 4th and 5th grade, so we will not be hiring for Ms. Fridlund or Ms. Thompson’s position. We will be hiring a half-time Social Worker.

We are also adding a 3rd grade classroom. We are happy to report that Mark Lindskoog will be filling this position. Mr. Lindskoog has worked as a teacher of English Language Learners and a Reading Support Teacher at Webster Magnet, Obama, Highland Park Elementary, and Horace Mann School.

Horace Mann Carnival: Save the Date! The Horace Mann School Carnival will be held on Friday, May 31. Come and celebrate the end of a fantastic year with games, food, and more!  If you haven’t been to this Carnival before – it is a party that is both inside and outside (if the weather is nice). We have games (ring toss, face painting, etc). Most games cost $1-2. There will be food trucks to purchase dinner or a treat. One of the trucks coming this year is Potter’s Pasties, 2019 City Pages best food truck! There is a used book sale. You can clear the shelves of books your kids have read and get new books for summer. You can donate children and young adult books outside the office starting the week of May 20.

Transportation Changes South of Ford Parkway Starting 2019-2020, Ford Parkway is designated as a Hazardous Crossing. All students living south of Ford Parkway are eligible for a bus. All students attending childcare at the Highland Community Center or JCC will be eligible for bussing.

Still Seeking Childcare for 2019-2020? The JCC dropped off some flyers at Horace Mann School. The JCC is another option for families.

  • Families can receive busing. JCC staff meet the bus.
  • Families can register for swimming lessons during after school childcare.
  • Families must be members, but JCC child care costs are cheaper than Discovery Club. Even with a membership, families save money.

The City of Saint Paul is starting a child care program at the Highland Community Center. As stated above, bussing will be provided by the school district. Our school district staff members are trying to get priority registration for Horace Mann families on the DC wait list. As soon as more details are available (pricing, registration, programming, deadlines), we will post it in the Perspectives.

The City of Saint Paul also has another after school program at several other rec centers. The school district does provide bussing to these centers. You can find the  Rec Check program at Edgcumbe, Jimmy Lee, Linwood, Palace, Scheffer, and MLK.

PTA Seeks Volunteers for the 2019-2020 School Year Interested in getting more involved next year? The Horace Mann PTA is always looking for new volunteers, committee members, and committee co-chairs! The PTA is specifically seeking a Co-Communication Board member and both co-chairs for the Volunteer Coordinator Board position. Additional Committee chair needs include: Family Volunteer Service Chair (or 2), Yearbook (or 2), Scholastic Book Fair (or 2), Silent Auction (or 2), Spring Plant Sale (or 2).
