Perspectives 05-10-19

Thank You to PTA and All Familes Thank you to everyone for all of the kind words, gifts, and treats during Teacher Appreciation Week. The staff truly felt spoiled!

Library Books All Horace Mann School Library books are due on Friday, May 24.

Walk to School Succeeds You should have seen the faces of the students as they got off buses in the morning on Wednesday, May 8. They, the students who were dropped off, the students who normally walk, and the staff and families had a great walk to school. The atmosphere was festive, fun, and energized. Students enjoyed walking and visiting with friends. Thank you to Carol Grady, city of Saint Paul volunteers, Ramsey County volunteers, SPPD, and our Transportation Department for the support. Thank you to all of the parents and relatives who joined in and walked. Thank you to our staff for joining in too!

Math Masters Correction One 5th grader, Sonia, was inadvertently left out of last week’s Math Masters article. She took 13th place out of 154 participants in the Fact Drill Individual Awards and received a ribbon. She was also on the Horace Mann team that finished in 11th place out of 31 teams.

Horace Mann School Spirit Week Next week the Student Advisory Board will host a spirit week. Students and staff are encouraged to wear clothing that fits the theme and express themselves.

  • May 13th Twin Day
  • May 14th Crazy Hair Day
  • May 15th Color Wars (color of your hallway i.e. 5th purple)

Summer Academic Programming at Home Register your child for the SPPS Community Education Program - Cahoots. Cahoots is a summer correspondence program that Community Education created in partnership with SPPS teachers. The program is designed to help students review what they learned in the previous school year to help retain learning during the summer and be ready to continue in the fall.

When youth register, they get a workbook and a reflection buddy.  Throughout the summer, they will do a lesson and then communicate with a buddy to solidify learning and make the process fun. Youth who complete the program in SPPS will be invited to an end-of-the-summer celebration where they meet their buddies.  (The entering K celebration is a half day; the entering 1st-6th graders go on a full day field trip).

Sample workbooks are available in the office for families to review.  Additional information is on the Cahoots website (commed.spps.org/cahoots). Flyers were sent home this week.

Horace Mann Carnival Preparations Continue Attend the Horace Mann "Street" Carnival on Friday, May 31 from 5-8 pm!
It's a fun event for the whole family to celebrate the end of the year. It is put on by volunteers at the school. You might see neighbors, former students, and perspective families.

Still Seeking Childcare for 2019-2020? The JCC dropped off some flyers at Horace Mann School. The JCC is another option for families.

  • Families can receive busing. JCC staff meet the bus.
  • Families can register for swimming lessons during after school childcare.
  • Families must be members, but JCC child care costs are cheaper than Discovery Club. Even with a membership, families save money.

The City of Saint Paul is also starting a child care program at the Highland Community Center. As stated above, bussing will be provided by the school district. Our school district staff members are trying to get priority registration for Horace Mann families on the DC wait list. As soon as more details are available (pricing, registration, programming, deadlines), we will post it in the Perspectives.

The City of Saint Paul also has another after school program at several other rec centers. The school district does provide bussing to these centers. You can find the  Rec Check program at Edgcumbe, Jimmy Lee, Linwood, Palace, Scheffer, and MLK.
