Changes to the Walking Line

Due to after-school commitments of the school patrols, there will be a decreased presence in the afternoon routes on Mondays and Wednesdays (EDL and LEGO League days). EDL tentatively begins on Monday, October 21.

Patrols will continue to walk the students across the Cleveland/Highland Pkwy intersections, but from there, all but one patrol will be returning to school. That patrol walks west on Highland Pkwy. These patrols are scheduled to be in after-school activities, which will not allow them time to walk the lines past the Cleveland/Highland Pkwy corners, and return to be on time for EDL.

For the Kenneth line, at least one patrol will be available to assist walkers across Highland Pkwy. From there, any walkers will walk without Patrols.

There is one patrol to walk the students to the Eleanor and Fairview corner. There will likely be a couple patrols, to walk with the students part-way up to the bench on Eleanor. From the bench, they’d need to return to school.

Therefore, it will be the responsibility of the parents of these walkers who need to walk beyond the Cleveland/Highland Pkwy intersection, beyond the Highland Pkwy/Kenneth intersection, and beyond the bench on Eleanor Ave to either meet their child(ren) and assist them walking home, work with other parents of walkers to walk students, or give their child(ren) the responsibility to walk home on their own.

Keep in mind that patrol absences could mean no patrol availability beyond the aforementioned intersections. Any questions, please email Mark Castillo, School Patrol Supervisor

Scout Coat Drive Ends Soon
Monday is the last day for the Coat Drive benefitting the Salvation Army Coats for Kids. As you dig into your closets to sort and prepare for cooler weather ahead, consider donating your too-small coats to benefit local kids in need.
This year there is a particular need for coats for older kids, so consider adult coats too. There is a drop box in the main office, and collection goes through the end of the day Monday, October 14. Please spend a few minutes this weekend preparing your winter wardrobe and identifying the coats you no longer use.
Please leave gently-used and CLEAN coats in the box. The Wolf Scouts will deliver them to the downtown St. Paul Salvation Army before the temperatures drop.

Questions? Email Sara Mielke. Thanks for helping to keep our whole community warm.

Bring in Your Box Tops Collection Before October 25

Help us reach our goal for fundraising via the Box Tops program by bringing in your Box Tops that you have collected over the course of the summer and start of the school year. Have your children submit their collection to their classroom teacher or drop in the main office box prior to October 25.

Change to Box Tops Program Beginning in 2019

Big changes are coming to the Box Tops program starting with select products in 2019! Over the next few months you’ll begin to see a new way to earn cash for our school. You’ll start to see a new Box Tops icon (below) on participating products - when you purchase a product with this icon you will then have the ability to scan your receipt to earn dollars for Horace Mann via the Box Tops Bonus App on your phone.

  • What does this mean? Eventually the paper Box Tops will no longer be accepted. During this interim time (for the next two years) we can still accept and submit paper box tops up until their expiration date.
  • How does the new program work? Parents will now download the Box Tops Bonus app, register, and select a school (we currently are registered as Mann Elementary School, St, Paul). Then scan an eligible receipt containing Box Tops products. The app will automatically add Box Top earnings to our school’s earnings online, giving visibility to see how you are supporting our school in real-time.
  • What do we do now? Please note that most eligible products have not transitioned to the new program. Please continue to clip and save the paper Box Tops as they can still be submitted and earn money for the school.

Support our Box Tops collection efforts by downloading the Box Tops Bonus app. As packaging begins to transition over to the new program in 2019 and 2020 on eligible products you’ll be prepared to begin scanning your receipts and earning dollars for Horace Mann!

If you have any questions please feel free to email Heather Clark.

Seeking Volunteers for Art Adventure!
Back this year, thanks to the generosity of the PTA, is the Art Adventure program!  Parent, family and community volunteers are needed to visit classrooms in February and explore six pieces of art.  This is a fun program that gets the students engaged in discussing art and is a springboard for their field trips to MIA in March.  Please see the attached flyer from MIA about the volunteer program.  Become a Picture Person!  There is no need to be an art historian or artist - you only need the ability to spark discussion with our students!  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Katie Miller (
PTA Volunteer Coordinator Still Needed
The PTA board is still looking for someone to take on the roll of volunteer coordinator (or 2 someones to co-chair!). Most of the work for this year is done, so it would be a great time to come on board, learn what needs to be done, finish up a few tasks this school year and be ready to go next year.

The description of the position:

  1. Assess the need for volunteers at the school.
  2. Work with teachers to determine volunteer needs.
  3. Collect volunteer data from the school community at the start of the school year and share that information with the Committee Chairs.
  4. Coordinate the PTA Volunteer recognition luncheon.
  5. Coordinate the 5th grade Ambassador program.

The first 3 tasks are already done for this school year, but you can work with the PTA board to learn about them for next year! If you have any questions, want to learn more, or take on the task, please email We really do need some parent support with this task, so thank you in advance!

PTA Forms To Turn In

Please turn in your forms for Volunteering and PTA Membership. Please think about how you are able to support Horace Mann School as a volunteer and consider joining the PTA. Our goals this year is to achieve 40% of our families as members. Extra volunteer and membership forms are available in the main office. Forms are also available on the new PTA website:
