Save the Date and Volunteer for Next Family Event- Make It Take It

The Horace Mann Make It Take It event will be held Friday, December 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Horace Mann School cafeteria. Make It Take It is a fun, family-focused event that provides all of the supplies needed to create fabulous, handmade craft items. Imagine each table set up with all the pieces needed to complete a little project. Imagine a caring adult and/or child helping with the project. Whether there are litle hands or big, you can make lots of interesting crafts. They are perfect keepsakes or gifts for loved ones!

But it can’t happen without YOU! The PTA needs volunteers for a shift, either 5:45-7:00pm or 6:45 to 8:30pm. You do NOT need to be a crafty person – just willing to help hand out supplies and assist kids as needed. Volunteer help is the only way to make it a success. Come work for part of the time and then enjoy making some crafts during the other half Please sign up here.

One reminder: children should be accompanied by an adult at this event -- no drop-offs.

Fitness Testing Results Released

This past week, students in grades 4 and 5 received their Physical Education fitness test results. Students were tested in the areas of cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and upper body strength. Scoring was both age and gender-specific, based on the Fitnessgram Test model. If you did not see the results, please email Mr. Castillo.

Welcome New Band Teacher

Olivia Bullock joins our staff to provide Band instruction to 4th and 5th graders. Ms. Bullock teaches on Monday and Wednesdays during EDL through the school district. She teaches on Wednesdays during the day through the support of the Horace Mann School PTA. Ms. Bullock brings great passion and enthusiasm in her first teaching position.

Measure While You Cook

Pick something to cook or bake with your child, and see what kind of measuring magic unfolds with questions like these:

  • When should we start? have your youngster read through the recipe and estimate the prep time. They can add that to the cooking time to tell you when you need to begin. For example, if you want to eat at 6pm, they might figure out: "30 minutes of prep + 45 minutes of cooking = 1 hour 15 minutes, so we should start at 4:45pm." Then, when you put the dish in the oven, they could note the time, set the timer, and say when it will be done. They'll be learning about elapsed time--as well as helping you make dinner!
  • Which measurements are the same? As you cook, let your child explore different ways to measure ingredients. If you need a cup of milk, ask how many ounces that is (8). Tip: Liquid measuring cups have hash marks for ounces. When you need 1/4 cup flour, suggest that they measure it in tablespoons (they'll find that 4 tablesspoons = 1/4 cup). Encourage them to work out other measurements, such as 3 teaspoons for each tablespoon. They'll get more familiar with measurement equivalents and also be more comfortable in the kitchen.
