New Budget Process and Upcoming SPPS Budget Information Session

SPPS is hosting a budget information session from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22 for the District Parent Advisory Council. The session will be held at SPPS administrative offices, located at 360 Colborne St. A complimentary light meal will be served to all attendees beginning at 5:30 p.m. and childcare will be available.  Members of the public are welcome.

SPPS is implementing a new budget process. This new process is called priority-based budgeting. This means SPPS will be prioritizing the work described in the District’s strategic plan, SPPS Achieves. A part of the new process includes input from the community, students, staff and other stakeholders.

In December, SPPS sent an online survey to members of our community. So now, SPPS wants to gather more information about themes identified in that survey. A full report on the survey will be available in February.

Additional public meetings will be held over the next several weeks to give members of the community additional opportunities for input on the SPPS budget. Those dates, times and locations will be announced soon.

School Choice Information This Spring

We would like to share information about school selection for next year. In particular, there are important deadlines for families with incoming Kindergarteners and families with current 5th graders.

There is one important point for all of our families in Kindergarten through 4th grade. Your child has a spot at our school as long as you wish to remain. If you move or live outside of Area F, you will have to provide your own transportation.

The enrollment deadline for the 2020-2021 school year is February 28, 2020. Even if an older sibling is enrolled at Horace Mann School, you still have to do an application for any incoming Kindergarteners. For the last 3 years, everyone who has wanted to be enrolled in Kindergarten has received a spot. We have not had a waiting list.

Current 5th graders who reside in Saint Paul have a reserved spot at a middle school depending on your address. If you are interested in a different school or live outside Saint Paul, you will have to complete an application by February 28, 2020.

On January 23, prospective families can come for our Open House from 5:00-6:30pm. Please let your friends and neighbors know about our great school. If they prefer, we will also have a booth at the Saint Paul Public Schools Choice Fair on Saturday, January 25 at the Union Depot from 9:30am-2:00pm. They can visit with staff and parents from all of the schools. Finally, we encourage all prospective families to sign up for a tour during the school day. There is a link at the top of our website. Tours run through the middle of February.

Children's Dental Services Available at Horace Mann on Monday, January 27, 2020

Dental disease is a common, chronic childhood illness. Children lose hours of school time due to dental-related illness. CDS targets kids who are not being served and brings dental care directly to them in the school.

CDS’ portable dental care is a convenient, affordable, efficient and cost-effective mobile oral health care program that allows us increase access to care while reducing barriers such as transportation and financial hardship. Dental care at school may include exams, x-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatment, sealants, fillings, crowns, extractions and other treatments as needed during regular school hours.

If you would like your child to receive dental care, please fill out this form and return it to school.

What Great Gathering Can You Sponsor for the 2020 Horace Mann School PTA Auction?

Did you know that approximately 40% of last year's the auctions’ proceeds came from Great Gatherings? Please help us meet (or even exceed) last year's numbers. Please host a Great Gathering as part of the Horace Mann School PTA Auction.

We need GG hosts. Why not you? Great Gatherings can be a low-cost and easy way to contribute to the school financially. They promote community-building for students, families and adults. Creativity, fun and simplicity are encouraged--they're easier to host than you may think!

Never hosted a GG? Not even sure what a GG is? Visit our Great Gatherings site. We'll guide you through the steps. You'll find examples of past events like Snow Day Insurance, Ladies Cribbage Night, Cooking classes, Concerts, Cycling Taproom Tours, Swim parties, and Picnics in the Park.

Great Gatherings are for the young and old--families, adults, or specific grade-age kids.
Already hosted a GG and ready to submit? First, take a look at the Great Gatherings Calendar (website above) and then: fill out a
Great Gatherings Submission form. Great Gathering (GG) submissions are due March 9 for the March 20 Auction.

Still have questions? Wonder how much to charge for your event? Don't know someone who could co-host with you? Questions? We have answers. Contact Aaron Litzenberg, Karen Vander Sanden and Karla Lauerman Cummins at

Thank you, and see you at the auction from the 2020 HM Auction Great Gathering Team!
