Families Are Invited for National African American Parent Involvement Day

Joseph Dulin created National African American Parent Involvement Day in 1995. It is celebrated in 49 states and even in some other countries around the world. Mr. Dulin was inspired to create a parent involvement day after going to the Million Man March in 1995. “A young man named Ayinde Jean-Baptiste, then 12 years old, was one of the speakers, and he challenged us to go back to our communities and do something,” Dulin says. “I got the feeling that, out of a million men, he was looking at me.” When he returned home, he gathered up some friends and family and NAAPID was born.

National African American Parent Involvement Day is a day for all parents to come to their child's school, see what their day is like and to support their child's educational future. Some of the goals of NAAPID are to:

  • Promote parent involvement in their child's education.
  • Address the serious achievement gap facing African American students.
  • Promote and provide strategies for all parents and students to take full advantage of the educational process at all levels of the educational system (preschool through college).

We'd like to invite you to our National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID). It is Monday, February 10, 2020. Our celebration will begin with an all-school assembly at 10:00am entitled Here, A Black Voice. It includes an invitation to join your child for lunch. There will be a special classroom activity called What I Love about ME.  Look for more details and an RSVP coming soon. If you need assistance with the cost of lunch, please email, call, or send a note to Principal Litwin.

Seeking Some Volunteers for Spring Conferences

Spring conferences are Wednesday, March 18; Thursday, March 19; and Friday, March 20.  We are seeking some help to do an in-person survey with some of our families. If you don't mind chatting with people and have some availability, please email Principal Litwin. If you have a high school or college student seeking some volunteer hours, have them email Principal Litwin.

Spring 2020 Girls on the Run at Horace Mann - Registration Opens February 1

Registration will open on February 1st for the Spring 2020 season of Girls on the Run at Horace Mann! GOTR Twin Cities engages in a lottery based online registration system between Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 to ensure a fair and equal process for all girls. After Feb. 8, registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Girls on the Run is an after-school program that uses the power of running to prepare 3rd - 5th grade girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Over the course of the 10-week, 20-lesson season, girls learn life-changing lessons about healthy friendships, teamwork, decision-making, self-respect and more, all while preparing to run a 5k.

Open to all 3rd - 5th grade girls; no previous running experience required, and need-based financial aid is available. Girls on the Run can also provide shoes, pants, and/or sports hijabs if needed. Register here!

Our Spring 2020 season will be each Monday & Wednesday 3:00 - 4:45 from March 16 - June 1 culminating with the Girls on the Run 5k on May 31. Girls who need to remain after school until 3:00pm must sign up for EDL. They will participate in the first rotation and then report to Girls on the Run. Contact the school office to sign up for EDL.

Silent & Live Auction - Roaring into the 2020s!

Watch your email on Friday this week for your special invitation to this year's Silent & Live Auction, coming up on March 20, 2020. The Auction will be held on March 20, 2020 at the University of Saint Thomas.  RSVP cards and more information on this fun, adults-only night out will be going home with students next week.

Through the generosity of parents like you, the auction has been an enormously successful fundraiser for Horace Mann School. Here are four ways you can support this fun event:

  1. Attend the event!  Tickets are $25 each. RSVP forms will be going home with students next week. Register early, mark your calendar and get your sitter on the phone!
  2. Buy raffle tickets! Winners will be announced at the event, but you do not need to be present to win.  Tickets cost $10 each and are a great way for grandparents and friends to support this fundraiser.  A flyer with this year's prizes will be included with your RSVP info packet (sneak preview: there's jewelry, fine dining and the ever popular Wall of Wine and Beer!).
  3. Host a Great Gathering!  Great Gatherings are organized group activities for Horace Mann students hosted by Horace Mann families.  Parents have the opportunity to sign their students up to attend these event at the Auction, with all proceeds donated to our school.  Need ideas or want to learn more?  Please visit the Great Gatherings website.
  4. Donate an item to the auction!  Are you crafty and have beautiful handmade items to contribute?  Have tickets to a game or show?  Do you or a family member own a business that could donate gift cards or products?  All of these would be terrific additions to our growing slate of items for bid this year.  And don't forget about the gift of your time.  Service donations like leaf raking, snow shoveling, home repairs and homemade treat delivery are terrific contributions.

Have questions or want to discuss a donation?  Contact Auction Committee Co-Chairs Allison Broughton (651) 328-9062 or Amy Hannigan (651) 206-1402.
