The US Census is Coming

Did you know that your information is kept private for 72 years? When I thnk about all the concerns right now for our immigrant and illegal immigrant families, I understand why they might not participate. However, the Constitution calls for a count of all residents, not citizens. Everyone should know it's safe to be counted.

Did you know that Minnesota may have been undercounted by over 900,000 people last time? Why is that important? For one, we could lose a Representative to the U.S. House to the state of Colorado. We are less than 50,000 people from this happening. For another, it helps determine over $770 million dollars in funding just for children: things like lunch programs, Head Start, health insurance, and more.

Please respond when the Census opens March 12-20. Please talk to and encourage your friends, neighbors, and community members to respond!

Time to Sign Up for Spring Conferences

Spring conferences will take place on Wednesday, March 18 from 3-7pm; Thursday, March 19 from 3-7pm; and Friday, March 20 from 8-11am. Please click the link below to sign up for each child's conference.

Lost and Found

Once again our lost and found is quite full. It is located by Door 5 going to the playground. Please check it soon. The lost and found will be placed in the main hallway during conferences. After conferences, it will be cleaned and donated to charity.

We need YOUR photos for the yearbook!

Ordering information is coming soon, but first we need your help with the content. Please consider submitting photos of your children and their friends at school events or clubs or extracurricular activities

Do you have photos from:

  • Cub Scouts
  • Girl Scouts
  • Girls on the Run
  • Band
  • Lego Robotics
  • Discovery Club
  • School Store

or events, such as the:

  • Sock Hop

  • Make it, Take it
  • Free Family Fun Night
  • Family Volunteer Service Committee
  • Great Gatherings (that occurred this school year, since September 1, 2019)

There couple options for sharing your photos. The first is a great way to download a larger number of photos.

  1. You can go to a Shutterfly Share site to upload pictures.
    1. If you don't have a Shutterfly account, register for a free account. Then go to
    2. If you have an account, just go to the email link above.
    3. You will need to request an invitation to share photos because it is a private group. Some PTA chairs were sent an invite. Check your Spam if you haven't seen it.
  2. You can attach your photos to an email and send it to and they will be automatically uploaded to the share site.
Please include a comment on your photos with the teacher's name/club/extra-curricular so we know where it goes. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Sara Mielke at Thank you for sharing your photos to help capture all of the fun we've had at Horace Mann in 2019 and 2020!
We Need YOU to Host a Great Gathering!
Great Gatherings are parties, concerts, lessons, game nights, crafting, athletic and other events dreamed up and hosted by Horace Mann students, families, parents and staff. At the Silent & Live Auction on March 20th, parents may register their students to attend these events for a small ticket price. All proceeds directly benefit Horace Mann.

The updated Great Gathering website has all the information you need to plan and host a successful event. If you are repeating a past event, look to the site to see the write-up and information from past years. Once you have decided on an event, use the website to check the calendar to avoid multiple gatherings on the same day, and then complete the sign-up form. The Great Gatherings team will put your event on the calendar, email you a confirmation, and advertise your event in the auction booklet.

Great Gatherings are an important part of our fundraising efforts at the Auction, and more than that, they provide unique, fun opportunities to bring our school community closer together.  To achieve our fundraising goals, we need to have 55 Great Gatherings on the roster.  We currently have under 25 on the list.  Together we can get there, but we need your help!
Submissions are due by March 9th and we are here to help you with your event! If you have questions please reach out to Karen Vander Sanden, Karla Lauerman Cummins or Aaron Litzenberg, or email
Bring in Your Box Tops Collection Before February 21!
Help us reach our goal for fundraising via the Box Tops program by bringing in your paper Box Tops that you have collected over the course of the start of the school year. Have your children submit their collection to their classroom teacher or drop in the main office box prior to February 21.

Changes to Box Tops Program Continues into 2020
Changes continue into 2020 for the Box Tops program.  You’ll begin to see a new way to earn cash for our school. You’ll start to see a new Box Tops icon (see picture attached) on participating products - when you purchase a product with this icon you will then have the ability to scan your receipt to earn dollars for Horace Mann via the Box Tops Bonus App on your phone.

What does this mean?
Eventually the paper Box Tops will no longer be accepted. During this interim time (for the next two years) we can still accept and submit paper box tops up until their expiration date.

How does the new program work?
Download the Box Tops Bonus app, register, and select a school (we are registered as Horace Mann School, St. Paul), and scan an eligible receipt containing Box Tops products. The app will automatically add Box Top earnings to our school’s earnings online, giving visibility to see how you are supporting our school in real-time.

What do we do now?
Please note that many eligible products have not yet transitioned to the new program. Please continue to clip and save the paper Box Tops as they can still be submitted and earn money for the school.

Support our Box Tops collection efforts by downloading the Box Tops Bonus app. As packaging begins to transition over to the new program in 2020 on eligible products you’ll be prepared to begin scanning your receipts and earning dollars for Horace Mann!
