School Policies for Illness

We have had a series of strep throat, stomach viruses, viruses, colds, and influenza. We need your help to try to reduce their spread.

Keep your child home for 24 hours after the last time they have:

  • Vomiting,
  • Diarrhea, or
  • A fever over 99 degrees without medication.

If they have a rash caused by a disease or with an unknown cause, please consult a doctor before sending to school.

Students do report to us if they have had these things. Teachers will send the child to the Health Office and the child will have to go home.

Finally the number one thing we can all do is to frequently and thoroughly wash hands. Thanks for your help in reducing illness!

Time to Sign Up for Spring Conferences

Spring conferences will take place on Wednesday, March 18 from 3-7pm; Thursday, March 19 from 3-7pm; and Friday, March 20 from 8-11am. Please click the link below to sign up for each child's conference.

Vision Screening for K, 1, 5 Next Week

Phillips Eye Institute’s Early Youth Eyecare (E.Y.E.) will be at Horace Mann School on Thursday, February 20, 2020 to conduct vision screenings. They will work closely with the school health office to prepare for the day. Since their inception, E.Y.E. has conducted over 210,000 vision screenings for potential vision issues including 1,325 screenings at our school since 2014.

The E.Y.E. Community Initiative strives to remove vision impairments as a barrier to learning for students in pre-kindergarten through the beginning of 9th grade.  If a student lacks resources to receive vision services, E.Y.E. will coordinate and fund the needed vision care including interpreter and transportation services, clinic exams, glasses, and surgical procedures.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our nurse Jill Galstad, jill.galstad@spps.org.

The US Census is Coming March 12

A kindergartener counted in the 2020 Census this spring will be starting high school when the next census comes around in 2030: That’s 10 years of school supplies, teachers, school lunches, and so much more. This is your opportunity to help ensure they have a bright future.

The 2020 Census is a count of every person who lives in the United States and its territories. Responding to the census helps your community get its fair share of funding. Census data guides how more than $675 billion in federal funding is distributed to states and communities each year for schools, health care facilities, roads, transportation, recreation centers, social services, and more.

Starting in March 2020, everyone living in your home needs to be counted. That includes children and newborn babies, citizens and noncitizens, relatives and nonrelatives, and even those staying with you temporarily.

It’s easier than ever to respond to the census. You can respond in 13 different languages, and you can complete it online, by phone, or by mail. Your responses to the census are safe and secure. The law requires the U.S. Census Bureau to keep your information confidential, and your responses cannot be used against you in any way.

Learn more about how you can shape your future at 2020CENSUS.GOV.

Lost and Found

Once again our lost and found is quite full. It is located by Door 5 going to the playground. Please check it soon. The lost and found will be placed in the main hallway during conferences. After conferences, it will be cleaned and donated to charity.

Yearbooks - ordering information and updated share site access!

Yearbook order forms will be coming home this week in Friday folders. Yearbooks cost $16 each.

Since not all families have room in their budget for these momentos, we are also collecting donations to help ensure that families who want a yearbook are able to get one. If each family were to round up their payment to $20, we could likely fund yearbooks for all. We also have a pay-what-you-can option, or a space to indicate if your family does not want a yearbook. Please fill out the form with at least one option checked and return to your child's teacher so that we can understand demand.

Please also consider submitting photos of your children and their friends at fieldtrips, school events, clubs or extracurricular activities.

Do you have photos from:

  • Cub Scouts
  • Girl Scouts
  • Girls on the Run
  • Band
  • Lego Robotics
  • Discovery Club
  • School Store

or events, such as the:

  • Sock Hop
  • Readathon
  • Book Fair
  • Fall BBQ
  • Boo Bash
  • Make it, Take it
  • Free Family Fun Night
  • Family Volunteer Service Committee
  • Great Gatherings (that occurred this school year, since September 1, 2019)
  • field trips

There couple options for sharing your photos. The first is a great way to download a larger number of photos.

  1. ***UPDATED***You can go to a Shutterfly Share site to upload pictures.
    1. If you don't have a Shutterfly account, register for a free account. Then go to https://hmyearbookphotos2020.shutterfly.com/.

We Need YOU to Host a Great Gathering!
Great Gatherings are parties, concerts, lessons, game nights, crafting, athletic and other events dreamed up and hosted by Horace Mann students, families, parents and staff. At the Silent & Live Auction on March 20th, parents may register their students to attend these events for a small ticket price. All proceeds directly benefit Horace Mann.

The updated Great Gathering website has all the information you need to plan and host a successful event. If you are repeating a past event, look to the site to see the write-up and information from past years. Once you have decided on an event, use the website to check the calendar to avoid multiple gatherings on the same day, and then complete the sign-up form. The Great Gatherings team will put your event on the calendar, email you a confirmation, and advertise your event in the auction booklet.

Great Gatherings are an important part of our fundraising efforts at the Auction, and more than that, they provide unique, fun opportunities to bring our school community closer together.  To achieve our fundraising goals, we need to have 55 Great Gatherings on the roster.  We currently have under 25 on the list.  Together we can get there, but we need your help!

Submissions are due by March 9th and we are here to help you with your event! If you have questions please reach out to Karen Vander Sanden, Karla Lauerman Cummins or Aaron Litzenberg, or email hmgreatgatherings@gmail.com.

Bring in Your Box Tops Collection Before February 21!
Help us reach our goal for fundraising via the Box Tops program by bringing in your paper Box Tops that you have collected over the course of the start of the school year. Have your children submit their collection to their classroom teacher or drop in the main office box prior to February 21.

Changes to Box Tops Program Continues into 2020
Changes continue into 2020 for the Box Tops program.  You’ll begin to see a new way to earn cash for our school. You’ll start to see a new Box Tops icon (see picture attached) on participating products - when you purchase a product with this icon you will then have the ability to scan your receipt to earn dollars for Horace Mann via the Box Tops Bonus App on your phone.

What does this mean?
Eventually the paper Box Tops will no longer be accepted. During this interim time (for the next two years) we can still accept and submit paper box tops up until their expiration date.

How does the new program work?
Download the Box Tops Bonus app, register, and select a school (we are registered as Horace Mann School, St. Paul), and scan an eligible receipt containing Box Tops products. The app will automatically add Box Top earnings to our school’s earnings online, giving visibility to see how you are supporting our school in real-time.

What do we do now?
Please note that many eligible products have not yet transitioned to the new program. Please continue to clip and save the paper Box Tops as they can still be submitted and earn money for the school.

Support our Box Tops collection efforts by downloading the Box Tops Bonus app. As packaging begins to transition over to the new program in 2020 on eligible products you’ll be prepared to begin scanning your receipts and earning dollars for Horace Mann!

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Heather Clark at kamr0009@umn.edu.

Business Partnership at Crisp & Green Nets PTA Dollars

Last year you asked for a few changes to the PTA business partnership model.

  • More flexibility with more locations
  • Longer hours
  • No flyers
  • More local small business partnerships to support our school but also the neighborhood
  • Healthier food options
  • Shorter lines.

The one last week had it all. 15% of all sales were donated to the Horace Mann School PTA. Families joined each other for a meal at Crisp & Green. We hope you enjoyed the food.

The PTA appreciates your support.  Look for the next Business Partnership in the Spring.  If you have an idea or would like to highlight your business and/or join our committee please contact Carrie Dorfsman  cpdorfsman@aol.com and/or Karla Lauerman Cummins karlaraelauerman@hotmail.com
