Dear Horace Mann Schools families,
Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year. While the children will continue working with the same teachers, it is like starting a brand new school year.
I will have a message next Friday before we kick off the new year. It will contain more details about how online school will work. As a quick preview, all students will log in on Monday morning, April 6. They will find a check-in, checklists, and lessons from the teachers. Teachers will respond to students.
All students will have work each day assigned by their homeroom teacher. Art, Physical Education, and Gym will assign work once a week. The counselor will assign about one lesson a month. Students who work with Special Educators and students who are learning English who work with Ms. Nguyen will have weekly contact the teacher.
Our teachers will teach students new routines and how to use their apps. Our homeroom teachers will be teaching reading, writing, math, social studies, and health. The staff will support families however we can. We will slowly build up to a full academic schedule over a period of weeks. Students and teachers will be flexible, patient, and solution-oriented with the technology.
I have every confidence in our staff. I feel like I am the coach of an all-star team made of the best and brightest teachers. I will be working hard to support them. They will create engaging lessons, support the children, and stay connected with families. We will be encouraging creativity and fun in the learning.
I will be available to support families with any building concerns. I can be called or texted at 651-321-4409 or emailed at email@example.com.
The good news is that we are only talking about 1% of your child's academic career. We are going to keep them learning and growing with you. Your child and the staff will learn a whole new set of skills and add new tools for their toolbox. We will be able to use them now and in the future to reach our full potential!
New Resources on School Website
We made some changes to spps.org/mann.
On the top menu, you will see a link called COVID-19 and another link called Distance Learning. You can find many supports and services by clicking them. For example, if your child is having a problem with their iPad, there is a link under Distance Learning. Want to connect a printer? There is a link under Distance Learning.
If you are looking for the Perspectives, it has moved down the homepage and is on the left side. You can find the latest issue or all issues archived.
Intent to Return and Class Placement
We are still requesting all families to complete an Intent to Return Form for each child. The information is very important in planning for next year. Please click here to go to the form. This form is due by Friday, April 10, 2020. Thank you in advance!
Questions 1-6 complete the intent to return. Questions 7-9 are optional, but will provide input into class placement.
The teachers and I will work together to create the 2020-2021 classes. The teachers have a deep and broad understanding of each child. They know their unique needs and strengths, learning style, academic levels in all subjects, peer relationships, leadership qualities, behavioral strengths and needs, family communication style, and family support with learning. We will use our years of experience with children, our knowledge of child development, and our understanding of educational fundamentals to develop class placements. Our top priority is to create balanced classrooms where every child has an optimal environment for success.
IMPORTANT: Forms that include a request for a specific teacher will NOT be considered and will be deleted. Class lists for the 2020-2021 school year will be available through Campus in early August and posted on the front windows August 28, 2020.
Catch Your Cough and Handwashing
The news stories about COVID-19 (coronavirus) are everywhere.
Please continue to practice two very important actions: handwashing and catching your cough/sneeze. You can click on handwashing for a flyer to post in your bathroom. You can also click on catching your cough for a flyer to post on the fridge.
