APRIL 11, 2017: SPPS Names Dr. Joe Gothard as Preferred Superintendent Candidate

Dr. Joe Gothard

During a special Board of Education meeting on April 11, the Board selected Dr. Joe Gothard as their preferred candidate for superintendent of Saint Paul Public Schools.

"Some of the strongest feedback we got from our community members was we want someone who understands us, who gets us," said Board Chair Jon Schumacher. "I think Dr. Gothard is someone who has a visible track record here within our larger metro community for over four years and before that, in Madison, Wisconsin."

"I am humbled by your belief in me and committed to working together in service of Saint Paul students, staff, families and the greater community," said Dr. Gothard. "I look forward to meeting you, getting to know you and collectively creating opportunities for Saint Paul Public Schools students to grow and thrive."

Tonight's decision concludes an extensive, five-month community engagement plan that gathered feedback through surveys, community meetings and group feedback sessions.

The offer is contingent on contract negotiations between the Board and Dr. Gothard, with plans to finalize an agreement around May 1.
